Spawned from the ashes of The Jim Jones Revue, The Righteous Mindthrust themselves into our consciousness in early 2015. Now, a few short years later they have released their hotly anticipated second album “Collectiv” and held a Sold-out launch party at London’s 100 Club.

Opening act, Trixie & the Train Wrecks, Trixie Trainwreck (Guitar, Vox Kick drum) and Charlie Hangdog (Harmonica) kicked off proceedings with a set full of Dirty Country Blues, 50s style R&B and honest rock ‘n’ roll. Trixie’s raw, smoky vocal combining with Charlie’s Harp to take on a trip down home town America, with songs such as the hard driving “Daddy’s Gone”, the solid beats of “God Damn Angels” and the Maxwell-Street-Blues of “Poor and Broke” all well-received by a rapidly increasing audience.

The Stage was cleared and made ready for the headliners, while Las Titis, two latex clad Gog-go dancing DJs entertained the crowd, bringing a swinging sixties vibe to the party. All the while, the room was filling up to the point where it was hard to find room to breathe, let alone move.

You could feel the anticipation, the tension, rising as the band appeared briefly on stage, checked instruments and then disappeared again. Finally, the wait was over. Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind walk on stage and explode into “Sex Robot” the first track from the “Collectiv” Album. Pressed right up against the stage, I am inches from Jim Jones right nostril as he leans over the crowd, a snarling banshee howling the words of the song and shaking maracas like they are possessed by Satan himself. All the while, Drummer Andy Marvel is holding down a frenetic beat as Bassman Gavin Jay wields his Rickenbackerlike it has a malevolent life of its own, and the stage-front crowd are ducking to avoid the flailing neck of the bass as it sweeps overhead. The action is frantic as the band blast through that first number with Mal Troon (Guitar, Lap Pedal Steel) moving from back of Stage to front of Stage, Guitar held high over the heads of those at the front, and Matt Millership looking to wring every note from the Keyboards. There is no time to draw breath though as the band launch into “Walk it Out”, keeping up the relentless onslaught on our senses. Even with Mal switching to Lap Steel for “Heavy Lounge” there is no slacking on pace or intensity. And so it goes for the rest of the show, a relentless assault on all the senses as the band power through songs from both Righteous Minds albums and some from the back catalogue of the Jim Jones Review. It is a glorious, chaotic rock ‘n’roll powerhouse of a show with the band throwing every shred of energy into every song, barely stopping for breath. At one point, Jim leaps from the stage into the audience, guitar in hand and continues playing as, on one knee, he brings the guitar to the ground, almost in supplication to the beast he has unleashed. The band are augmented by the tenor Sax of Stuart “Lodekka” Dace (The Future Shape of Sound) and Luci-Fire’s (The Urban Voodoo Machine) Baritone sax, adding more aural delights to the sonic maelstrom smashing into the room. Of course, a party is not a party without guests and Jim Jones has rounded up some of the finest in town: Paul-Ronney Angel (The Urban Voodoo Machine), Sister Cookie and Alan “Dirty Strangers” Clayton providing backing vocals on “Satan” and Barrie Cadogan (Primal Scream/Little Barrie) providing additional guitars on “Shazam”. One very special treat was saved for the last two songs where Nick Jones and Elliot Mortimer, original Jim Jones Revue members, took over on Drums and Keyboards for “Rock’n’Roll Psychosis” and “512”, closing out a very fine party.
